Today, we honor our mother’s—living and deceased.
I came across this story that, in many ways, speaks to the power of motherhood:
In his book, Taking Flight, Anthony DeMello writes:
A woman goes into a store and finds God behind the counter. She asks, “What do you sell here?” God responds, “Everything your heart desires.” So, she immediately asks for peace, love, freedom from fear, and happiness for all of humanity.” God smiles and says, “I’m afraid you misunderstood. We don’t sell fruits here. Only seeds.”
Think for a moment that we were once seeds and how our mothers cultivated us from the womb, birth, and our through life stages: childhood, adolescents, young adulthood, and adulthood.
How often we went to her on the best and difficult days of our lives.
We often disagreed with her, disrespected her, yet despite bad or abhorrent behavior, she remained faithful to her vocation as a mother.
Today, we, your imperfect sons and daughters, acknowledge your sacrifice done out of love and sacred duty.
We are indebted to your sacrifice. Your stewardship. Your devotion to your imperfect children.
Blessings,
Father Brian
